The illustrations of Jazmin Velasco

Mr Elton loves Miss Woodhouse, Emma

Mr Darcy is the patriarchal male: morally uncompromising, absolute in his convictions, wildly handsome, yet aloof to the point of arrogance. Despite being proud and initially blind to her own feelings, Lizzy can't help but fall for him in Austen's iconic love story, Pride and Prejudice.

A former English Literature student, Austen is a literary heroine of mine and Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourite novels. The social satire, the unrequited love, the restrained manners... what isn't there to enjoy about her writing.

So imagine my delight when on a recent trip to the National Galleries of Scotland, I came across charming illustrations of memorable scenes from Pride and Prejudice and other Austen novels by the printmaker, Jazmin Velasco. (I very randomly found them in the gift shop if you are looking for them.)

Originally from Guadalajara in Mexico, Jazmin studied oil painting and print making in Mexico City before moving to London to join the Greenwich Printmakers Association. Now also a member of Southbank Printmakers, her work can be found in galleries across the UK.

It's nearly 200 years since Austen's death, but her world continues to capture people's imaginations - and Jazmin's illustrations perfectly epitomise this world.
